New data from LinkedIn about posts for new jobs shows that job openings in the customer service field continue to rise in the job market. LinkedIn data reveals a growing demand for customer service representatives (CSRs) and other frontline roles in 2023.
Hiring trends in Q1 2023 reveal a huge increase in demand for customer service roles, with the number of job applications for CSRs doubling in just three months. That’s right; you read that correctly… 2X QoQ (Q1 2023 compared to Q4 2022).
Before you ask, the data doesn’t mention anything about seasonality, but I’d assume the LinkedIn Data and Trends Blog would have mentioned it if it was a factor.
According to LinkedIn data on paid job postings, published on April 13, 2023, customer service now ranks as the fourth-most in-demand career globally.
Retail jobs, which also require close contact with customers, continue to be in high demand, particularly amidst historically high quit rates among US workers.
Healthcare and operations roles are also experiencing a surge in demand, with patient service representatives seeing a 2.2x increase in job posts. Additionally, home health licensed practical nurses have seen a 2x increase in job posts during the same time period. This could be attributed to the ongoing strain facing the healthcare industry, as well as an increase in demand for home-based healthcare services.
In the operations sector, assembly specialists and operations officers have experienced a 1.9x and 1.7x increase in job posts in Q1 2023, respectively. This could be due to the growing need for supply chain management and logistics roles as the global economy continues to rebound and restructure in the wake of the pandemic.
According to LinkedIn, these are the roles with the fastest-growing demand (QoQ)
Roles with the greatest increase in paid job posts, Q1 2023 (Jan. 1 – Mar. 31, 2023) vs. Q4 2022 (Oct. 1 – Dec. 31, 2022)
1. Patient Service Representative (2.2x)
2. Marketing Associate (2.1x)
3. Beauty Advisor (2.1x)
4. Home Health Licensed Practical Nurse (2x)
5. Customer Service Representative (2x)
6. Assembly Specialist (1.9x)
7. Application Engineer (1.8x)
8. Photographer (1.8x)
9. Operations Officer (1.7x)
10. Merchandise Associate (1.7x)
Customer service representatives represent the largest volume of job posts compared to any other role. As a result, CSRs rank fourth among the most in-demand jobs on LinkedIn overall, following registered nurses, salespersons, and software engineers. Meanwhile, demand for drivers has cooled slightly in the past quarter.
As the demand for customer service roles and other frontline jobs continues to rise, the value of these careers and the skills required to succeed in them will become increasingly important in the job market.
