A tough job search is exhausting. As a job seeker, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed by the many challenges you face. Stress about finances, the stigma of being unemployed, and the high attention to detail needed to send in perfect applications and resumes are all stressful. Being on the job hunt, more than almost anything else is filled with anxiety and frustration. So, what can you do to maintain a positive attitude and overcome job search fatigue?

    Recognize and accept your emotions

It’s normal to feel discouraged and disheartened during a job search. Acknowledging your emotions is the essential first step toward managing your mental health. Don’t be too hard on yourself; remember that finding a job takes time.

Stay positive and focus on what you can control

Maintaining a positive attitude is crucial during tough times. Focus on what you can control and let go of things beyond your reach. Remember that setbacks are temporary. As they say, “This too shall pass.” You’ll get there!

    Set realistic expectations and goals

Setting achievable goals can help you maintain a sense of accomplishment. Break down your job search into smaller tasks and tackle them one at a time. Celebrate small victories, like getting a referral from an ex-colleague or getting a call back for an initial screen. Making progress is good. Celebrate it!

Take breaks from the job search

Job searching can be all-consuming, but it’s essential to take breaks and focus on your well-being. Dedicate time to activities that bring you joy and help you relax. Remember to get out and exercise.  It’s free, and it’s known to improve your mental health and help you maintain a positive attitude.

Stay organized and create a routine (this one is key for me)

Having a structured routine can help you stay focused and manage your time effectively. Set aside specific hours for job searching, networking, and other job search activities. Staying organized can help reduce stress and make the process feel more manageable. Use tools like Jobalope, Teal, or Jobscan to create an efficient and effective workflow.

    Network and connect with others

Connecting with other job seekers and professionals in your field can provide valuable insights and support. Use LinkedIn to get in touch with ex-coworkers, family, and friends. Attend networking events or join online forums to share experiences and advice. Networking helps uncover hidden job opportunities, and referrals from your network help get your resume shortlisted.

Learn from your job search experiences and grow

Each job search experience is an opportunity to learn, improve and re-invent yourself. Reflect on your job screening and interview experiences and identify areas for growth. Continuously refining your skills and approach can help increase your chances of success in the future.

Job searching can be lonely, frustrating, and very challenging.  Every job seeker faces obstacles, and it’s how we respond that makes the difference. Be intentional about implementing the advice listed above to actively improve your attitude and stay positive. Focus on what you are trying to become. Remember, one day, all this will be in the past, but for today just keep on keeping on.
